Natural New Year’s Resolutions

Happy New Year!

Are you a resolution-maker? I figure it’s as good a time as any to think consciously about making changes in my life. Where do I want to be a year from now?

Last year, I resolved to finally put my pen (or keyboard) where my mouth was and start this blog. I had a plan for a year’s worth of research and ideas…a thorough exploration of the North American food system in a year; no problem right?

Only a few dozen posts and some quiet reflection later, I realized I’m feeling the weight of this goal and have been paralyzed beneath it, struggling to focus. It’s impossible to change everything at once. Not to say I haven’t discovered a thing or two about bread, “modified milk ingredients“, and October Unprocessed (which will definitely be part of this year’s plan as well).

This year, I’m going to try a more realistic baby-steps approach: swapping out one brand for another; making something from scratch when I would usually buy it; that kind of thing. Just in time for my weekly grocery shop, I’ll post these small “swaps” each Sunday.

Wednesdays I’ll save for the nerdy stuff: the research, science, technology and regulations. I know not everyone is into what the legal definition of “natural” is but I promise to try to make it interesting.

So the first “Swap-out Sunday” will be January 5 and it will be all about peanut butter. Stay tuned for a year stuffed to the gills with wholesome food choices, real-food recipes, and useful tidbits of knowledge you can take to the grocery store.
